Marie Gehring Obituary

GEHRING

Marie L.

The Lord has taken Marie L. Gehring to her final resting place on April 1, 2020, at the age of 101.

Wife of the late Howard J. Gehring, and dear mother of Charles J., Glenn E., and Claudia G. Miewald of Idaho.

She is also survived by three grandchildren, Lynn Ann Fischer (Todd), Ross J. Miewald, and Alexander K. Miewald, and nieces Elaine Ebbitt (Gary), Lois Lewis (the late Bud), and Evelyn Ward (Paul).  Preceded in death by her sisters Helen Schanck and Hilda Schenk and brothers Joseph, Ralph and Jerome Schenk.

Born in Pittsburgh in 1918, she remained in the South Side of Pittsburgh her entire life.  Marie married Howard J. Gehring in 1941 and remained happily married until Howard’s sudden death in 1975.  She was a dedicated wife and mother.   A business woman, she assisted running the family grocery and deli business every day.  She was a volunteer at the children’s school activities and served as an officer of St. Michael’s Parent Teacher Association for many years.  She was also an active church volunteer at St. Michael’s Parish in the South Side and St. Paul’s Monastery.  During the late 1980s and early 1990s she was a member and President of St. Paul’s Monastery Guild and served as President of the Carrick AARP.

Family was everything to Marie and she hosted years of great family gatherings.  Marie’s love of music and dancing started at an early age and lasted her entire life.  Marie was a big fan of studio wrestling and also had a large collection of shot glasses from her many travels although she was never a drinker.  Her quick wit and sense of humor will never be forgotten.  She met her goal of living to age 100 and celebrated in style with family and friends on October 23, 2018 which was designated by the City Council as Marie Gehring Day in the City of Pittsburgh. During her lifetime she has been witness to the most change that mankind has experienced to date.  Ironically she was born during the Spanish flu epidemic and has returned to our Lord and Savior during another world pandemic.
