Lila "Momma" Scoggins Obituary

Life Reflection of Lila Mae Scoggins

"Lila Mae Scoggins, affectionately called "Momma" by family and friends, was born on June 12, 1946, in Birmingham, Alabama.  Lila is a beloved wife, mother, and matriarch.  Lila  passed away peacefully on Saturday, March 15, 2025, exchanging her earthly life for eternal rest. She was the daugther to the late Willie and Lela Lewis.  Lila spent much of her life in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.  Lila later met the love or her life, James E Scoggins, Sr., and they were blessed with Ten children.

Lila's life was a testament to her hardworking and independent spirit.  She excelled in basketball, volleyball, and softball during her high school years at South Vo Tech High School, following her earlier education at Knoxville Elementary School.  Her career spanned various fields, including work at WAMO Radio Station, McDonald's, and Arcadia Maintenance Services.  In her younger years, she was a talented hairdresser known for her Crisco-based straightening technique and ear piercing services.

Beyond her professional life, Lila had a deep love for R&B music, particularly artists like Teddy Pendergrass, The Whispers, Smokey Robinson, and Anita Baker. Her exceptional culinary skills were matched only by the love she poured into every dish. More than anything, Lila was a devoted mother who opened her home and heart not only to her own children and grandchildren, but also to great-grandchildren and other children in need.  Lila was known for her warm welcome.  She provided shelter, stability, and unwavering love, balanced with a firm hand when necessary.  Her humorous words of wisdom and her beautiful, contagious smile and laugh will be remembered by all who knew her.

Lila was predeceased by her daughter, Tonya Martin, son Morgan Lewis, grandsons Eric, Terrance, and Andrew Martin, daughter-in-law Belinda Martin, son-in-law Raymond McCarthy Sr., and her beloved dog, Taco.

She leaves behind to cherish her precious memories her husband, James E. Scoggins, Sr.; children Cleveland Martin, Sr., James Martin, Walter Martin, Sr., Joyce Martin, Darren Martin, Sr., Lawrence Martin, Sr., James E. Scoggins, Jr., Arlene Moore, Curt Moore, and Kimberly Finch; 10 sisters; 10 brothers; 65 grandchildren; 103 great-grandchildren; 8 great-great-grandchildren; and a host of aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.  Lila's memory will be forever cherished by all whose lives she touched."

Friends received MONDAY 11 - 12 noon at THE LIGHTHOUSE, 810 Fisher Street, Pittsburgh, PA 15210, where a Homegoing will be held at NOON.
