George Cochrane Obituary

George W.

Age 92, beloved husband of Virginia “Jinny” Kelly Cochrane, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, November 22nd, 2023, at their home in Providence Point, Scott Township, PA.

Born in Pittsburgh, George was the son of John C. and Margaret W. Cochrane. Following the death of his mother, he was raised in St. Mary’s, PA, by his grandmother Ruth Cochrane and aunt and uncle Mary and Tom Gregory. After graduating from St Marys High School, he attended Lafayette College where he received his degree in Chemical Engineering. Following college, he went to work for Union Carbide in New York City.

While attending church with his father and step-mother, Alice Cochrane, in Bloomfield, NJ, he met his lifelong love, Jinny. As a pending draftee, he married Jinny in 1953 before they moved to Anniston, AL, where he served in the US Army.

Following his military service, he and Jinny moved to San Francisco, CA where he resumed his career with Union Carbide. While there, he and Jinny welcomed two sons, Thomas "Tom" and Kenneth "Ken". Following a move back to the east coast, George and Jinny lived in New Jersey for a brief stint before settling in Mt Lebanon, PA. Soon after, they welcomed a third son, William "Bill" to the family. George and Jinny lived in Mt Lebanon until 2008 when they began their move to Providence Point in Scott Township. They were the second couple to move into Providence Point when it opened in 2009.

George spent his entire career with Union Carbide. Initially hired in 1952, he retired at the age of 65 in 1995. As a sports fan, George, a devoted Steelers and Pirates enthusiast, passed along his passion to his sons, frequently taking them to games, routing for the home team. As an adult, he took up golf and skiing. The family embraced these activities with him, enjoying ski trips to Vermont as well as Colorado and Utah. George frequently played golf at Montour Heights Country Club where he hosted clients as well as his sons.

George also shared Jinny’s passion for the arts, frequently attending Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra, and Pittsburgh Opera performances. In addition, he enjoyed museums, books on history and travel. He and Jinny visited all 50 states and multiple countries abroad.

A long time member of Southminster Presbyterian Church, George was active as an Elder,  Usher and President of the Men’s Bible Class. Always a caring person, George frequently went out of his way to help elderly, and disabled people. He often pulled over his car to help an elderly person traverse a precarious sidewalk or challenging stairs.

Surviving George are his wife, Jinny, a sister Jane Hilgenberg, his son Ken Cochrane, wife Pam, and his daughter Cyndee Cochrane, husband Norman Sturtevant; grandchildren Sarah Peak, her husband Thomas, Margaret Rizzi, her husband Steve, Maria Cochrane, her husband Nate Pickrell, Gretchen Cochrane, Thomas Cochrane, his wife Kristen, Ian Cochrane, Rebecca Sturtevant, and Evan Sturtevant.
