Donald Joseph

Donald Joseph Degenhardt, 90, of Rockville, MD; formerly of Pittsburgh, PA, passed away peacefully after suffering a stroke on August 9, 2017.  He was born May 10, 1927 to Jacob and Hilda E. Degenhardt.  He attended Overbrook Elementary School and Carrick Jr. – Sr. High School.  He missed his High School’s June Graduation Ceremony because he enlisted in the U.S. Navy on May 8, 1945, just two days before his 18th birthday.  (His Mother accepted his Diploma on his behalf.)

In the Navy, Don served on three ships: USS Currituck, USS Curtiss and USS Farenholt.  He received an Honorable Discharge, August 9, 1946.  Upon his return from the Navy, he earned his Real Estate Sales and Broker licenses and several Insurance licenses while joining the family business begun by his parents.  Eventually he opened his own office at the corner of Maytide St. and Brownsville Rd., operating the Don Degenhardt Agency for over thirty years.

Don married Joan Williams, December 29, 1952, at Concord Presbyterian Church, Pittsburgh.  They enjoyed 63 years and three days of love-filled marriage until Joan’s passing on January 1, 2016.   They are survived by three children, Lisa (Richard) Frickel of Cottage Grove, MN; Don “DJ” (Elisabeth) Degenhardt, II of Greenwood, IN; Tracy (Joe) Niro of Monrovia, MD; ten grandchildren and one great-grandson.  Don was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, three sisters and his wife.

Per his request, a private family service celebrating his life and the inurnment of his ashes will be held in the Jefferson Mausoleum Chapel at Jefferson Memorial Park Cemetery, Curry Hollow Rd., Pittsburgh.
