JOHNSON

Renee Etta

Age 60, beloved daughter of M. Grace Matthews, and sister of Fletcher Harold Johnson, died on Thursday, April 13, 2017 at UPMC Presbyterian Hospital in Pittsburgh.

She was born in East Hempstead, New York and lived in Bologna, Italy and Geneva, Switzerland for eight and a half years before the family returned to the United States. She lived in Teaneck, New Jersey where she began writing poetry before moving to Pittsburgh in 1990 to study and earn degrees from Duquesne University and the University of Pittsburgh School of Law.  Her professional career was dedicated to the protection of children while writing poetry and nurturing her faith.  Her poem “A Child of Color” was painted by a distinguished artist, Rudy Guttierez, a lifelong friend, and was chosen for inclusion in the Freedom Exhibition that toured the world when the Berlin wall was demolished.

She is survived by her mother, a retired New York attorney, and brother, an international photo journalist, two nephews, Malcolm J. Johnson and Jordan N. Johnson, and predeceased by her father, Fletcher James Johnson, M.D.  She will be sorely missed by all who knew her.

Friends received Saturday 4 - 5:30 pm at TIMOTHY K. SLATER Funeral Services, Inc. (412-381-3337) 425 Brownsville Road, Mt. Oliver, 15210, where a homegoing service will be held at 5:30 pm.
