About Us

When I was little, it was a great feeling whenever we'd get to stop to see dad, and all of the people who worked with him at our funeral home in Brentwood, and maybe even getting the chance to stay and help him by cutting the grass or running the sweeper.  His name is J. Fred Slater, Sr., a funeral director, as was his dad, Herb, his grandfather, John H., Sr., and his great-grandfather, William.

Now I am fortunate to look forward to when he comes and helps me here, on the hilltop, where he started serving, as did the rest of our family over 130 years ago.

1872
Great-great grandfather, William Slater, began his business in Mount Washington, where he was joined by his son, John H. Slater, Sr.

1903
Great grandfather, John H., Sr., began his funeral establishment in Mt. Oliver, 228 Brownsville Road, next door to the old Rialto Theater. My grandfather, Herbert W. Slater, great-uncle, John H., Jr., and father, J. Fred Slater, Sr., began their careers here.

1938
Grandfather, Herbert W., and his brother, John H., Jr., began a new branch in Brentwood, 4201 Brownsville Road, where I began my service.

1997
My brother, Stephen, begins serving the Route 51 South corridor, Stephen D. Slater Funeral Home, in the Jefferson Hills area, who has recently been joined by his son, our 6th generation, Drew, in 2011.

The portrait in the foyer area is of my great-grandmother, Johanna Fredericka Vallowe Slater, who lived down the road on Alice Street, where she, and John H., Sr. raised their 5 children: Dorothy, Herb, John, Arthur and Charles.

In addition to funeral directing, background experiences include teaching (music k-12), music directing/conducting, Counselor/Parent for troubled youth, George Junior Republic, Grove City, purchasing/managing in the boating industry, sales, and current Choir Director/Music Coordinator of Morning Worship at the Lebanon Presbyterian Church, West Mifflin.

I am blessed to be married to my wife, DeeAnn, for 25 years and doubly blessed with two daughters, Tristan, 22, and Adriane, 17.

Sincerely,

Timothy K. Slater
